Friends of Ohlone Park
The origins of Ohlone Park are firmly rooted in the legacy of Berkeley's 1960's social justice movements. It was just a strip of dirt when hundreds of protesters, fenced out of People's Park, marched to Hearst and Grant and named this place "Peoples Park Annex". Overnight, structures were erected, huge pots of soup simmered in giant kettles over campfires, and childrens' play equipment was created out of whatever was on hand. Today the park encompasses playgrounds for tots and school-aged children, playing fields, a native plant garden (with another on the way), a Community Garden, the nation's first official Dog Park and numerous redwoods and meadow areas for relaxing, exercising, and socializing.
